​Every owner who has lost a pet knows the gut-wrenching feeling that floods their whole body. You start to blame; the thunder storm that scared your pet off, the collar that slipped or broke off, the gate that allowed your pet to pass without supervision, and yourself. It's not normal for us to be able to control the situation that enables our pets to wonder off. What if there was a better way to increase your pet's chances of being found and reunited with you?! Would you do it?

#1. Micro Chip!
In today’s technological world, tracking your missing dog has never been easier. Thanks to the technology of microchips, more people have been reunited with their dogs. If your dog loses its collar and ends up lost, a vet or shelter can scan for the microchip, which will contain their name, the owner’s contact information, and their primary vet or shelter information. It is completely painless and your dog will have no idea it even has a microchip. Only about the size of a grain of rice, a vet will inject the microchip under your dog’s skin and it will stay there for his or her entire life. It’s also important because if someone else claims your dog; legally, by looking at the microchip, you can prove the dog is yours.

#2. Collar with Updated Tags
​While it may seem obvious, some people forget how extremely vital it is for your dog to not only have a secure collar, but also have a dog tag. Loose collars can fall off and, over time, become torn and wear down. It is important that you check your dog’s collar to make sure it is still in proper shape. You can make custom dog tags at your local pet store for an affordable price. You can also write your phone number on the collar itself as a precaution.

#3. Leash your Pooch
If you own a dog, that means you must own a dog leash. Having a leash is a fundamental part of having a dog. It is your responsibility to not only properly identify your dog with tags and a collar, but to be able to handle them in any situation. A retractable leash will NOT do! Please be sure to use a controllable leash type for your dogs weight and size. Did you know it's not actually legal to have a dog off leash in public?

​OHIO LEASH LAW: In Ohio, dogs must be physically confined or restrained or properly leashed and controlled by a person, except in cases where the dog is hunting with its owner or keeper.

​#4. Licensing your dog - YES you have to!
Ohio law requires every dog owner to renew their license between December 1st and January 31st of each year. No matter what your dog likes to do make sure it has a license to do it.
​Why is it important? Well, if your dog is registered and they become lost or stolen a shelter can look up your lost pet's identification number and have all local shelter or foster groups on alert!

​Top Three Reasons to Register you Pet:
  1. A County or Shelter group will be able to keep your pet’s information on file, as well as your name, address and phone information.
  2. If your pet becomes lost, and if someone finds your pet, they will be able to check your pet’s registration number and link it to your contact information so you can be called about your pet’s whereabouts.
  3. Your pet’s registration confirms that you are the registered owner of the pet.
Not only does pet registration benefit your pet, but most of shelter groups will use the fees collected to feed and care for the homeless pets in the area. In addition, they may also use the money from the sale of each tag is used to help fund spay/neuter initiatives.
